What a Player's Plus-Minus Actually Tells You
Learn how basketball plus-minus is calculated stint by stint, why +10 in a loss happens, and how raw plus-minus differs from BPM, APM and RAPM estimates.

Plus-minus in basketball is the change in a team’s scoring margin while a player is on the court: team points scored during the player’s minutes minus opponent points scored during those same minutes. If the team outscores its opponent by seven while a player is on the floor, that player is +7; if it is outscored by four, the player is -4. The number describes what happened to the score during shared minutes. It does not measure how much of that result the player caused, and a single-game figure is shaped as much by the nine other players on the floor as by the player it is attached to.
What Plus-Minus Measures and How It Is Calculated
The NBA statistics glossary defines plus-minus as the point differential when a player or team is on the floor. For an individual player the formula is team points during the player’s minutes minus opponent points during the player’s minutes.
If a player is on the court while the team scores 25 points and allows 18, the player’s plus-minus for those minutes is 25 − 18 = +7.

The value covers only the minutes the player was on the floor, so it does not have to match the final margin. A player who sits for half the game can finish +8 in a loss if the team was outscored more heavily while that player was on the bench.
Raw plus-minus is descriptive. It records a shared team result during a player’s court time; it does not separate the player’s actions from what teammates and opponents did.
How Plus-Minus Adds Up Across Stints
Most players enter and leave a game several times. The final plus-minus is the sum of the margin changes across every stint. In the table below the player’s team score is listed first.

The team gained six points of margin in the first stint and lost four in the second, so the player finishes +6 + (-4) = +2.
The entry score does not matter on its own; only the change in margin after the player enters counts. A player who checks in with a 10-point lead and exits with the score tied records -10 for that stint even if the team scored plenty of points during it. The team lost ten points of relative ground, and that is all the statistic records.
Everyone on the floor together receives the same change. If five teammates share a 7–0 run, all five gain seven points of plus-minus for that stretch regardless of who scored, defended or stood in the corner.

What a Positive or Negative Number Does Not Prove
A positive plus-minus is favorable in one precise sense: the team gained ground while the player was playing. It does not prove the player caused that margin or played well in every respect.
An efficient scorer who makes several difficult shots can finish -8 if the opposing lineup scores even more effectively during the same minutes. A player who misses most of their shots can finish +10 because teammates defended well, forced turnovers and converted their own chances. In both cases the number describes the lineup’s scoring margin, not an individual performance grade.
The same distinction explains why a player’s plus-minus and the game result can point in opposite directions. A positive number in a loss means the team won the player’s minutes but lost by more while the player sat. A negative number in a win means the team lost the player’s minutes and made up the difference during the rest of the game.
Plus-minus does not count screens, communication, positioning or any other specific contribution. It records only the change in score. Film and more detailed statistics are needed to work out which actions produced that change.
Why One Game of Plus-Minus Misleads
Whenever one player is on the court, nine others also move the scoring margin: four teammates and five opponents. That is why raw plus-minus is so variable and cannot isolate a single player’s contribution, as this explanation of plus-minus variability details.
Before reading anything into an individual number, check who else was involved. A player surrounded by starters faces a different task from one anchoring the bench unit, and minutes against the opponent’s strongest group are not equivalent to minutes against its reserves. Role matters too: a player creating offense, one supporting a primary scorer and one carrying a difficult defensive assignment are all measured against the same scoreboard.
Game state can distort the figure further. Minutes played early, late, during a blowout or in garbage time happen under different levels of urgency and against different rotations. And in any single game, one team shooting unusually hot or cold for a few minutes can swing a stint by double digits without anyone playing differently.
Playing time sets the scale of raw totals. A player who logs 38 minutes has far more exposure to scoring swings than one who plays eight, so their raw figures are not directly comparable.
Scaling Plus-Minus Per 40 Minutes Helps Less Than It Seems
One common adjustment expresses the result per 40 or per 48 minutes: scaled plus-minus equals raw plus-minus divided by minutes played, multiplied by the chosen minute standard. A hypothetical +4 over 16 minutes becomes +10 per 40, because 4 ÷ 16 × 40 = 10.
That standardizes the unit for playing time and nothing else. It does not make the underlying minutes equally difficult or representative, and it cannot remove differences in teammates, opponents, roles or game situations. A +10 per 40 built on 16 minutes of garbage time is still 16 minutes of garbage time. Larger samples are more informative because one unusual run or shooting stretch carries less weight. There is no universal number of games after which raw plus-minus becomes definitive, though. Even a full-season total remains shaped by team strength, recurring lineup partners, opponent quality and role.
How Coaches and Fans Should Use Raw Plus-Minus
For a fan reading a box score, single-game plus-minus answers one narrow question well: how did the team’s scoring margin change during this player’s minutes? “How well did this player perform?” is a broader question that plus-minus alone cannot answer.
Coaches get more from it by comparing frequently used two-, three- and five-player combinations over meaningful samples. If a group repeatedly gains ground, its lineup plus-minus flags a combination worth reviewing. It cannot establish why the group succeeded; that is a film question. A favorable lineup result should prompt checks on whether the group consistently created efficient shots, whether its defensive coverage prevented high-value opportunities, whether its success came mainly against weaker opposing units, whether one hot shooting stretch drove most of the margin, and whether the pattern repeats across different games and matchups.
A lineup’s result belongs to the lineup. It does not automatically identify one player as the cause, especially when substitution patterns keep pairing that player with the same teammates. The responsible reading combines plus-minus with minutes, role, opponent context, lineup data, conventional box-score statistics and film, which together separate a repeatable pattern from a lucky or unlucky stretch.
Raw Plus-Minus vs. BPM, APM and RAPM
Not every statistic with “plus-minus” in its name measures the same thing. Raw plus-minus is an observed scoring result. BPM, APM and RAPM are estimates built from different inputs and assumptions.

Raw plus-minus is the simplest: the team’s actual scoring margin during the player’s minutes. No model is needed, but the result does not isolate the individual.
Box Plus/Minus is a different statistic despite the similar name. It uses traditional box-score information, an estimate of the player’s position or role, and team performance to estimate contribution, expressed as points above league average per 100 possessions, with 0.0 representing league average (methodology). BPM is a rate and does not account for how much a player played; Value Over Replacement Player, or VORP, is the related measure that incorporates playing time. A player’s BPM and observed on-court margin can differ because they answer different questions.
Adjusted Plus-Minus starts from lineup or possession results and attempts to account for the quality of teammates and opponents. In simplified terms, it looks at scoring margins across many lineup combinations and estimates a value for each player after considering who shared the court.
Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus adds regularization, a statistical method that pulls unstable estimates toward average when the data cannot confidently separate player effects. That limits extreme estimates in small or highly interconnected samples without removing the uncertainty. Adjusted and model-based metrics fix some weaknesses of raw plus-minus and introduce their own dependence on data quality, sample size and modeling choices. They remain estimates rather than verdicts.
The reading rule is the same for all of them: plus-minus tells you what happened to the score while a player was on the floor, not exactly why it happened. Use it to spot patterns and raise questions, then check minutes, lineups, opponents, role, other statistics and film before judging the player.
