NBA Season Game Counts: 82 Regular Season, Up to 110 With Playoffs
NBA teams play 82 regular-season games and up to 28 playoff games. See team and league totals, plus how the Play-In and NBA Cup affect the count.

An NBA team plays 82 regular-season games and can play up to 28 playoff games, for a maximum of 110 combined. A team that reaches the NBA Finals plays 98–110 games across those two competitions. A team that misses the playoffs has 82 regular-season games and no playoff games.
Those totals exclude the Play-In Tournament and NBA Cup championship game, which can add separate games. The NBA confirms that each team still has an 82-game regular season in 2026–27, including most NBA Cup games. Source: NBA Cup rules
How many playoff games can one team play?
The playoffs have four rounds: the first round, conference semifinals, conference finals and NBA Finals. Each series is best-of-seven: the first team to win four games advances or wins the championship, so a series lasts four to seven games. The NBA’s 2026 playoff schedule shows the four-round bracket and series ending in four through seven games.
A team’s total therefore depends on how far it advances and how long its series last:
| Playoff finish | Playoff games | Regular season + playoffs |
|---|---|---|
| Does not reach playoffs | 0 | 82 |
| First round | 4–7 | 86–89 |
| Conference semifinals | 8–14 | 90–96 |
| Conference finals | 12–21 | 94–103 |
| NBA Finals | 16–28 | 98–110 |
These are calculated ranges under the current format, assuming a full 82-game regular season. Play-In games and the NBA Cup championship are excluded.
For example, a champion that sweeps every round goes 16–0 in the playoffs and plays 98 games overall. A champion that wins all four rounds in seven games goes 16–12 and plays 110 games. Winning the championship requires 16 playoff wins under this format; losses account for the extra games.
Do the Play-In Tournament and NBA Cup add games?
The Play-In adds one or two games for participating teams. Teams finishing seventh through tenth in each conference compete for the final two playoff seeds. A team can qualify after one game or need a second; some participants are eliminated without reaching the playoffs. These games take place after the regular season and before the playoff first round. Only the NBA Cup championship adds a game beyond the 82-game schedule. Group-play games, quarterfinals and semifinals already count as regular-season games. The championship does not count toward regular-season records or statistics, so the two Cup finalists play an extra game. Source: 2026 NBA Cup rules
Counting all of those competitions, one team could theoretically play 113 games: 82 regular-season games, one Cup championship, two Play-In games and 28 playoff games. That is a format-based maximum, not a claim that a team has done it. Preseason games are outside this count.
How many games are there across the entire NBA?
For the whole 30-team league, the regular-season calculation is:
30 teams × 82 games ÷ 2 = 1,230 games.
Divide by two because each game involves two teams. The playoffs contain 15 series—eight first-round series, four conference semifinals, two conference finals and one NBA Finals—each lasting four to seven games. That adds 60–105 games, producing a league-wide total of 1,290–1,335 regular-season and playoff games. These are calculated bounds, not a fixed annual total. If you also count the six Play-In games and the one NBA Cup championship, the range becomes 1,297–1,342 games.
For player-stat comparisons, keep the competitions separate: an 82-game regular-season total is not the same sample as a combined regular-season and playoff total. That distinction also matters when comparing points scored in a playoff run, where longer series create more scoring opportunities.
